A day at school

At Illawarra Hospital School, learning is flexible, personalised, and responsive to each student’s needs during their hospital stay. Families can find information here about attendance and enrolment processes, the learning options available across the school day, and how we work in partnership with parents and carers to support every child’s continuity of learning.

Enrolment

School-age children who are admitted to the Paediatric Ward at Wollongong Hospital as either inpatients or outpatients may enrol at Illawarra Hospital School. Children must be enrolled in a K-12 public, independent or catholic school to be eligible to enrol.

NSW Department of Education students attending Illawarra Hospital School will have their enrolment shared with their census (home) school for the time of attendance at Illawarra Hospital School. Census schools will receive an email to inform that the student has been shared with Illawarra Hospital School.  The census school can adjust their records accordingly. Attendance at Illawarra Hospital School is counted as an attendance and marked as "H" in the census school roll.

Parents/caregivers will need to complete an information form. Once processed, a shared enrolment is set up with the student's census school who will receive a notification.

Attendance
Students will either attend the classroom or be provided bedside learning materials if necessary. Illawarra Hospital School acknowledges that school attendance will vary according to a student's medical needs and is very flexible and accommodating to support this.
Learning in the Classroom

Learning on the Ward

Students have the option to receive bedside learning materials, which will be carefully prepared by Illawarra Hospital School staff and delivered directly to the student’s bedside.

Throughout the day, Illawarra Hospital School staff will oversee bedside learning, offering support and providing additional materials as needed to ensure continuous progress.

Parents and Carers

Parents and carers play a vital role in our school community, and their involvement is essential to each child’s learning journey and overall wellbeing.

We actively encourage open communication about individual learning needs and wellbeing concerns, as this partnership enables us to create educational experiences tailored to each student.

Parents and carers are welcome to accompany their child into the classroom; however, to maintain a focused and uninterrupted learning environment, we kindly ask that they do not stay during the lesson.
